Asokamitran (also spelled Ashokamitran) is the pen name of a well-known Indian Tamil author and translator, whose real name is T. Janakiraman. He was born in 1933 in Tamil Nadu, India and was a prolific writer, known for his short stories and novels. He started his career in the Tamil film industry as a screenwriter and later turned to literature. He wrote over 200 short stories, over a dozen novels, several essays and a biography. His work has been widely translated and has won several awards including the Sahitya Akademi award for his novel “Aayirathil Oruvan” in 1965. He passed away on February 2, 2018.
